New York Law School Announces New Joint Degree Program in Forensic Psychology and Law

New York, NY (PRWEB) November 28, 2011

New York Law School (NYLS) and John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York, announced today the creation of a dual-degree M.A.-J.D. program in forensic psychology and law to train attorneys with a specialization in mental disability law. The program will begin in the fall 2012 semester.

The new dual degree brings together two fully-developed programs at each institution: the J.D. at NYLS and the M.A. in forensic psychology at John Jay. J.D. students at NYLS have the opportunity to specialize in mental disability law, through course offerings that represent the most comprehensive mental disability law curriculum of any law school in the world, while John Jay’s M.A. program in forensic psychology specializes in psychology as it relates to law and the courts. John Jay’s psychology department includes more than 35 full-time faculty members who specialize in forensic areas, including six professors who are both attorneys and psychologists.

“This new program is a perfect fit between our two institutions, as it combines the strongest law program specializing in mental disability law in the country, with the strongest forensic psychology program in the country,” said Dr. James S. Wulach, Director of the M.A. Program in Forensic Mental Health Counseling at John Jay. “Our graduates will be well-trained lawyers for people with mental disability issues and have the potential to become legal advocates, work on public policy, or become law professors in this unique niche.”

The 128-credit program allows students to count 12 law school credits towards their M.A. degree and 12 M.A. credits towards their law degree, allowing them to graduate with both degrees in four years instead of five. Required courses include Survey of Mental Disability Law; Mental Health Professionals, Social Science, and the Law; Criminal Psychological Assessment; Criminal Law; and Legal Practice. Electives include such courses as Mental Disability and Criminal Law; Race, Gender, Class, and Mental Disability; Forensic Reports, the Role of Experts, and Forensic Ethics; and Custody Evaluations, Juvenile & Family Law, and Mental Disability.

“I’m very excited about the joint program because it highlights the interdisciplinary nature of what we are trying to do through our Mental Disability Law Program [MDL],” said Professor Michael L. Perlin, the MDL program’s Director. “We created our courses very specifically to appeal to both lawyers and mental health professionals. This program helps create a synergy that ensures, as best as we can, that graduates will have a deep understanding of the other’s discipline.”

To be admitted into the dual-degree program, students should apply separately and be accepted into both NYLS and John Jay. Students will have the option of beginning their first year in either of the two degree programs.

In addition to the new dual-degree program, NYLS, through its Mental Disability Law Program, also offers an online Masters of Arts in Mental Disability Law Studies and a Certificate in Advanced Mental Disability Law Studies, the only degree and certificate of their kind to be offered by an American Bar Association-approved law school. AFGE Member Receives Grantham University Scholarship for Criminal Justice Degree

Lyndsay Kaulave pictured with Greg Seay of Grantham University

Kansas City, Mo. (PRWEB) November 02, 2011

Grantham University, a 60-year-old institution delivering accredited online degrees to working adult students around the world, has awarded Lyndsay Kaulave, a member of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 1482, with a full scholarship. The scholarship was presented by AFGE National Vice President, Eugene Hudson, and Grantham University representative, Gregory Seay, at a VPP Lunch and Learn hosted by Local 1482.

Kaulave’s scholarship, valued at $ 36,000, will cover the cost of tuition, required textbooks and software as she completes an undergraduate degree in criminal justice at Grantham. Additionally, AFGE provided Kaulave with a new laptop to help with her studies.

“This is the first year that AFGE has expanded its partnership with Grantham University to offer a scholarship to one of our members, and we are so proud to be helping Lyndsay,” said John Gage, national president of AFGE. “She epitomizes what we stand for and how we strive to help our members achieve their goals, both personally and professionally.”

The partnership with the AFGE, which was established in 2004, makes sense for Grantham, said Joseph McGrath, president of Grantham University.

“The organization’s values of working for and with federal government employees mirror our devotion to our students and our commitment to opening the doors of higher education for those who serve our country in any number of capacities,” he said.

Kaulave works for the Marine Corps Police Department in Barstow, Calif. She has been a member of AFGE since 2006 when she first became a federal employee.

In her application essay she wrote about working to provide for her son and daughter and valuing what a degree means for her career.

“In today’s society and in many government jobs, a degree is essential in career advancement,” she wrote. “I may have joined AFGE for reasons apart from its main mission; however, I believe that AFGE through Grantham University can effectively achieve its mission through me.”

Grantham University’s accredited online degree programs are flexible and portable, allowing students to fit education into their life instead of arranging life around their education. The University offers 38 different associate, bachelor and master’s online degrees in a wide variety of disciplines. Grantham’s online criminal justice degrees include: Certificates of Learning in Emergency Operations Management, Computer Forensic Investigations, Juvenile Justice and Criminal Investigation; an associate degree in Criminal Justice; and a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice with concentrations in Homeland Security and Computer Science.

Distance Learning Insider Finds That Local Colleges and Universities Often Offer Online Degree Options Too

Distance Learning Insider Finds That Local Colleges and Universities Often Offer Online Degree Options Too

Online Degrees

(PRWEB) May 03, 2011

Amy Whitmire, Executive Director of Distance Learning Insider, conducted an informal study that showed that many people considering going back to school were not aware of the many options available to them online from their own local colleges and universities. “Unfortunately, most state schools have smaller advertising budgets than the for-profit, online-only universities out there. A student wishing to research online university options doing a standard internet search may only be successful in finding links to for-profit schools,” noted Ms. Whitmire.

To address this issue, Distance Learning Insider has compiled links to a large number of traditional brick and mortar colleges and universities that are now offering online degree programs in addition to their regular on-campus options. Hundreds of online degree programs are available in fields such as business, nursing, education, computers, liberal arts, and more, and include Associate’s Degrees, Bachelor’s Degrees, Master’s Degrees, and even Doctoral Degrees.

Ms. Whitmire continued… “We want to help future online students consider all of their school choices before signing up for a degree program. While there is certainly nothing wrong with a fully accredited for-profit and online-only university, we simply want students to know that they may find that their online degree goals can also be met from one of their local colleges or universities. We hope to be able to give that insight to students so that they can be fully prepared.”

In addition to information on various online degree programs, Distance Learning Insider also offers an online learning forum for students, potential students, and even online teachers to discuss anything related to online and distance learning.

Master the Design and Business of Video Games with SNHU?s New Online BS in Business Studies Degree Concentration

Master the Design and Business of Video Games with SNHU’s New Online BS in Business Studies Degree Concentration

(PRWEB) September 22, 2011

Electronic gaming has become one of the most popular forms of entertainment in the world today. In addition to the gaming aspects, it is also used for education, training, medical and other purposes.

The worldwide game industry is expected to reach $ 68 billion by 2012, increasing the demand for university graduates with video game design and development skills. Our gaming concentration prepares students for these exciting new careers.

Along with a solid grounding in business coursework, Southern New Hampshire University’s new online degree in B.S. Business Studies now offers a concentration in Game Design & Development, giving students a breadth of knowledge to grow their careers in and out of the video game industry. The curriculum was designed and developed by practicing experts in the business and IT fields to bring real-world relevancy to the online classroom.

This new online program concentration includes classes in information technology and digital games, design and virtual game environments and advance information system design, while the B.S. in Business Studies component equips students with critical business knowledge that transcends any one career path.

This curriculum is modeled after recommendations of the International Game Developers Association, the world’s largest nonprofit membership organization serving professionals who create video games. Since the gaming field is so diverse, and extends beyond entertainment to education, business, medical and even military sectors, the overall industry is large, diverse and growing. A degree in Game Design & Development offers opportunities for a host of careers, including but not limited to lead storyteller, designer, sound producer, general producer, and programmer. And a foundation in business studies creates a skill set that will set you apart from the competition for these jobs.

“Games for both entertainment and serious purposes are on the upswing in the industry,” according to Lundy Lewis, chair of SNHU’s Information Technology department. “This degree will prepare you for the business and technology aspects of the gaming industry. Beware: You should have a passion for games to pursue this course of study.”

This degree is ideal for adult learners and traditional undergraduates who wish to transfer college credits, switch to business from another discipline or supplement a technical degree or background with a bachelor’s degree in business.

Visit Southern New Hampshire University to learn more about the B.S. in Game Design & Development program.

American and British Degree Evaluators Challenge Widespread Non-Acceptance of Three-Year Bachelor Degrees from India as Indicating Racism Rather than Logic

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

American and British Degree Evaluators Challenge Widespread Non-Acceptance of Three-Year Bachelor Degrees from India as Indicating Racism Rather than Logic

(PRWEB) October 11, 2005

Consider Nigel Holmes, who has a three-year bachelor’s degree from one of the UK’s least competitive universities, London Metropolitan University. He would have little trouble having it accepted as equivalent to a US bachelor’s degree in the United States.

Now consider Rajendra Kumar, who has a three-year bachelor’s degree from India’s top rated university – one acknowledged to be on a par with MIT. He would face an uphill battle getting American graduate schools to accept his degree as equivalent to a US bachelor’s degree.

Why the different treatment of these college credentials? According to two degree evaluators from the US and UK who recently completed a study of acceptance of Indian three-year bachelor’s degrees in the US, reasons for accepting the UK three-year degree but not the Indian one do not stand up to logical scrutiny and appear to indicate racism rather than good judgment.

Sheila Danzig, director of Career Consulting International (http://www.TheDegreePeople.com), and John Kersey, President of Marquess Educational Consultants Limited (http://www.marquess-education.com), co-authored a study of this issue called “Does the Value of Your Degree Depend on the Color of Your Skin?”(http://degree.com/articles/3-year-indian-degree.html). Their article, which has been accepted for publication in the online edition of Academics India, concludes that the two educational systems are materially equivalent. Indeed, the present Indian system of higher education was actually created by the British when Great Britain occupied India, basing it on the Oxford/Cambridge model.

Danzig and Kersey examine and reject several reasons given for non-equivalency of the three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees, pointing to standards put forth by UNESCO, the Canadian Provincial Assessment Committee and the Council of Europe, among others. Their conclusion: “Such a difference in policy, where not made on a sound academic basis, may well be concluded to be racially discriminatory. If the value of your degree is not to depend on the color of your skin, the Indian three-year bachelor’s degree must be accorded its proper value as an international credential.”

As part of their study, Danzig and Kersey looked at the admission requirements stated at the web sites of many US graduate schools and queried numerous directors of admissions about their school’s policies. While the Wharton School accepts three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees for admission to graduate studies in business, they are definitely in the minority.

“When we started including this study with our evaluations as well as expanding the evaluation itself to make the matter very clear, the rate of acceptance of the degree has increased dramatically,” says Danzig, whose company evaluates international educational credentials. “When the arguments are laid out objectively, people understand the inequity and are open to a proper equivalency. But the evaluation must be done properly.”

“This has a serious impact on people’s ability to immigrate, get higher education and obtain employment,” adds Kersey. “We are very proud of what we are doing to right this wrong. We are confident that the more exposure our study gets, the acceptance of the three year Indian bachelor’s degree will grow, as it should.”

Sheila Danzig is the director of Career Consulting International (http://www.TheDegreePeople.com), a foreign credential evaluation agency that evaluates the three-year Indian degree (with adequate contact hours) as equivalent to a US Bachelor’s degree.

John Kersey is the president of Marquess Educational Consultants, Ltd. (http://www.marquess-education.com), a British educational consultancy firm with particular interests in international credential evaluation and equivalency.

The study, Does the Value of Your Degree Depend on the Color of Your Skin?, appears at http://degree.com/articles/3-year-indian-degree.html.

Boise, ID (PRWEB) September 19, 2008

Education Portal ‘My Nursing Degree’ Provides Nursing Shortage Relief

Education Portal ‘My Nursing Degree’ Provides Nursing Shortage Relief

Jersey City, NJ (PRWEB) June 4, 2008

Online publishing company MND, publishers of the education portal MyNursingDegree.com has been at the forefront of providing prospective nursing students and Registered Nurses online educational opportunities. By allowing current RNs and other nursing candidates an easy to use and central database of online educational opportunities, My Nursing Degree is assisting students in finding the career they love and helping to curb the nationwide nursing shortage plaguing the healthcare industry.

The nursing shortage epidemic in the U.S. is expected to intensify as baby boomers age and the need for heath care grows. The latest projections from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, published in the November 2007 Monthly Labor Review, predict that more than one million new and replacement nurses will be needed by 2016. Unfortunately even with current enrollment steadily increasing on an annual basis U.S. nursing schools turned away 40,285 qualified applicants from baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs in 2006 due to insufficient number of faculty, clinical sites, classroom space, clinical preceptors, and budget constraints. To tackle this ongoing problem statewide initiatives are underway from nursing schools to hospitals all working in tandem in developing new strategies to meet the need for qualified nurses.

One particular strategy has been the increased usage of online coursework. Nursing students all across the country are fulfilling much of their text based coursework utilizing online programs. Harnessing the power of the Internet, registered nurses looking to enroll in accelerated nursing programs, achieve their MSN, or enter into specialized fields of nursing are fulfilling much of their requirements in the comfort of their own homes and on their own schedules. The growing popularity of nursing degree online programs has contributed to increased enrollment. Nursing students, many who already work fulltime, enjoy the flexibility to complete coursework on their schedule and nursing schools are provided a needed relief from scarce traditional brick and mortar classroom space.

A leader since 2005 My Nursing Degree Online features a wealth of article resources relating to the various online nursing programs, a nursing shortage blog, and career planning tools to help students save money, find the work they love and, most importantly, make well-grounded career decisions. In a small way the education portal My Nursing Degree Online is helping more students find their chosen path in nursing while at the same time helping to curb the nursing shortage epidemic. After all it’s the small steps that count.

Guide to Almeda University’s Online Life Experience Degree Program Serves Students Ready to Take Career in a New Direction

San Juan, PR (PRWEB) November 16, 2008

Over the last few decades the job mobility rate has continued to increase as workers explore their interest and aptitude in a variety of industries. While many skill sets transfer well from one field to the next, often the lack of a university degree makes working in one’s preferred field difficult. Almeda University has addressed this problem by providing a new guide that helps men and women earn life experience degrees online.

The guide to online life experience degrees for those looking to change careers offers practical advice on degree selection and program completion as well as post-graduate assistance. According to Richard Franklin, Almeda University spokesperson, these life experience degree guides take the confusion out of earning a degree online. “We first help the student discover which life experience degree is most appropriate for their skill set, experience and career goals,”says Franklin. “Once the degree has been chosen, we walk them through the degree requirements to ensure that they get the most out of our program.” Franklin also notes that students are well served by post-graduate assistance that “gives them the edge in the job market.” This is especially helpful when changing career paths.

Students seeking a new career direction are not the only ones who benefit from Almeda’s guide to life experience degrees online. The online university has developed an entire guidebook series to support students as they work to complete online life experience degrees. The guides address questions about the application process and walk students through the required life experience degree documentation. Post-graduate services include resume assistance and other job-hunting advice and tools. Other online life experience degree guides include those for international students, stay-at-home parents returning to the workforce and transfer students.

Almeda University is an online institute that has been serving the international community since its inception in 1997.
