Theresa A. Soriano, MD, MPH, Receives Hastings Center Award for Excellence in End-of-Life Care

New York, NY (PRWEB) January 17, 2012

Theresa A. Soriano, MD, MPH, Director of the Mount Sinai Visiting Doctors Program, and Associate Professor of Medicine and Assistant Professor of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, has been honored with the prestigious Hastings Center Cunniff-Dixon Physician Award for improving the care of patients near the end of life.

Dr. Soriano is one of only three early-career physicians in the country recognized for her commitment to the field and contribution through practical research and clinical work. She will receive the award in a ceremony at Mount Sinai.

Under Dr. Soriano’s leadership, the Visiting Doctors Program at Mount Sinai—one of the nation’s largest academic home-based primary and palliative care program—has created a safety net for more than 1,200 homebound patients and a comfortable in-home palliative care environment.

“The success of the Visiting Doctors Program in providing end-of-life and primary care in a challenging health care environment is the result of Dr. Soriano’s advocacy, her passion for caring for the underserved, and her deep understanding of the importance of the person within the patient,” said David Muller, MD, Chair of the Department of Medical Education, Dean for Medical Education, and Associate Professor of Medicine. “Whether it is for the patient at the bedside, the trainee struggling to make sense of caring for someone at the end of life, or lobbying in the state legislature, Dr. Soriano brings to bear her intellect, passion for justice, and keen interpersonal skills to get the job done.”

Since 1995, the Mount Sinai Visiting Doctors Program has provided compassionate health care to elderly or ailing adults who are unable to leave their homes. The award-winning program grew out of the collaborative efforts of the Samuel L. Bronfman Department of Medicine and the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine. Throughout Manhattan, the Visiting Doctors team of physicians, nurses, social workers and administrative staff delivers comprehensive primary and palliative care to an underserved segment of the population—homebound adults, consisting of geriatric patients, as well as those with psychiatric, neurological, complex, and terminal illnesses. The team also reaches out to families and caregivers to offer emotional support and counseling.

“It has been so rewarding to see so many patients benefit from the primary and palliative care services that Visiting Doctors provides, and to expose students and housestaff to this work,” said Dr. Soriano. “I am honored to be recognized by the Hastings Center and the Cunniff-Dixon Foundation for the difference we are making in the lives of these patients and families.”

The Hastings Center Cunniff-Dixon Physician Award is provided by the Cunniff-Dixon Foundation, whose mission is to enrich the doctor-patient relationship near the end of life, in partnership with The Hastings Center, a bioethics research institute that has done groundbreaking work on end-of-life decision-making. The nomination and selection process was administered by The Duke Institute on Care at the End of Life. The Cunniff-Dixon Foundation was founded in 2005 by Matthew A. Baxter in memory of his wife, Carley Cunniff, who died of breast cancer, and in recognition of her attending physician, Dr. Peter S. Dixon, who enabled her to die a peaceful death at home with her family and loved ones.

AFGE Member Receives Grantham University Scholarship for Criminal Justice Degree

Kansas City, Mo. (PRWEB) November 02, 2011

Grantham University, a 60-year-old institution delivering accredited online degrees to working adult students around the world, has awarded Lyndsay Kaulave, a member of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 1482, with a full scholarship. The scholarship was presented by AFGE National Vice President, Eugene Hudson, and Grantham University representative, Gregory Seay, at a VPP Lunch and Learn hosted by Local 1482.

Kaulave’s scholarship, valued at $ 36,000, will cover the cost of tuition, required textbooks and software as she completes an undergraduate degree in criminal justice at Grantham. Additionally, AFGE provided Kaulave with a new laptop to help with her studies.

“This is the first year that AFGE has expanded its partnership with Grantham University to offer a scholarship to one of our members, and we are so proud to be helping Lyndsay,” said John Gage, national president of AFGE. “She epitomizes what we stand for and how we strive to help our members achieve their goals, both personally and professionally.”

The partnership with the AFGE, which was established in 2004, makes sense for Grantham, said Joseph McGrath, president of Grantham University.

“The organization’s values of working for and with federal government employees mirror our devotion to our students and our commitment to opening the doors of higher education for those who serve our country in any number of capacities,” he said.

Kaulave works for the Marine Corps Police Department in Barstow, Calif. She has been a member of AFGE since 2006 when she first became a federal employee.

In her application essay she wrote about working to provide for her son and daughter and valuing what a degree means for her career.

“In today’s society and in many government jobs, a degree is essential in career advancement,” she wrote. “I may have joined AFGE for reasons apart from its main mission; however, I believe that AFGE through Grantham University can effectively achieve its mission through me.”

Grantham University’s accredited online degree programs are flexible and portable, allowing students to fit education into their life instead of arranging life around their education. The University offers 38 different associate, bachelor and master’s online degrees in a wide variety of disciplines. Grantham’s online criminal justice degrees include: Certificates of Learning in Emergency Operations Management, Computer Forensic Investigations, Juvenile Justice and Criminal Investigation; an associate degree in Criminal Justice; and a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice with concentrations in Homeland Security and Computer Science.

University of Saint Mary’s Nursing Program, Both On-Campus and Online, Receives Accreditation

University of Saint Mary

Leavenworth, KS (PRWEB) April 29, 2008

It’s official, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at the University of Saint Mary (USM) has received accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)*. The nursing program gained initial accreditation in April 2008 for the maximum period of five years. The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) agency is a national accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education. USM offers both an on-campus and online Bachelor of Science in Nursing both of which received accreditation.

This news was very exciting indeed for the faculty and nursing students at University of Saint Mary. “You could hear the campus nursing students cheer when they received the news,” shared Laura Davis, vice president of marketing and communications at USM. The online nursing students were very excited when they received this news as well.

USM is a built on a strong academic tradition dating back to 1858, when education and nursing were the two founding missions of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, sponsors and founders of the university. However, in 1994 it was decided by the university to discontinue an RN to BSN nursing program due to the global surplus of nurses. In order to serve the current critical need for baccalaureate-prepared nurses, USM reinstated the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree in fall 2006.

Because current projections for the demand of bachelor-trained nurses will greatly increase over the next 10 years, in August 2006, USM launched an online Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree so that registered nurses from across the country can participate in the program. Designed and taught by nursing experts, the online RN to BSN degree program can be completed in as little as 18 months and requires no on-campus visits. This online BSN also features mentoring experiences as a practical alternative to clinical hours.

“Now with CCNE accreditation, the BSN program at University of Saint Mary is accepted nationwide by other notable institutions, which is critical for BSN nurses entering a diverse workforce and/or continuing their nursing education to a graduate or doctoral level,” said Rebecca Cahill, RN, MSN, nursing program director.

*Information related to this accreditation may be obtained by contacting CCNE @ One Dupont Circle, NW, Suite 530 Washington, DC 20036 Phone: (202) 887-6791 Fax: (202) 887-8476.
